Soul, Spirit, Body and Life

Spirit, Soul, Mind and Body do not fit in a nice easy to explain paper.   There is overlap in each area just as the dawn mixes with the day.    Somehow i feel like as if all of these are mixed together as a baker mixes ingredients in a mixing bowl.

What we can see and know scientifically:

  1. Body.  The structure that acts like a chariot for something inside of you.

    1. Why do your cells do what cells do? Why does your heartbeat on its on?

    2. What makes us different from Animals or are we

    3. Does our body reflect our soul?

  2. Mind.  The part of your body that does thinking.  2+2=4

    1. Where do your thoughts come from?

What we don’t see:

1.     Soul:  We have a life source inside of us.

2.     Spirit:  be conscious and have awareness of more than our stomach, reproduction and living quarters.

Humans are made in the Shadow of the almighty:   We are made to be like Him, in Him and for Him.

Something inside of us is at peace when we are in harmony with the will of God.  We all strive to be in harmony with our Creator.

We are made by the hands of God from dust and the Breath of Yahweh.   Difference here as the animals were produced just from the earth.  We on the other hand received a breath of Chayim (life plural- His Essenense) and became a LIVING SOUL.   Nesh'mat Chayim - plural. Infused witht the character of God. Adam in the Garden received this, did others?

Animals and plants have: Nepesh Chayah- life from the earth.

Gensis 2:7 “And יהוה (Yahweh)  Elohim formed(pressed) the man out of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils breath/Neshamah of lives. And the man became a living being/Nephesh.”

·      Breath of lives: It can be a masculine plural.

·      Neshamah:  Breath of God; Spirit;Soul

Proverbs 20:27 “The spirit/Neshamah of man is the lamp of Yahweh searching all his innermost parts.”

Rabbis believe:  Five levels to the soul.

  1. Nefesh              - Physical vitality

  2. Ruach              -  Spirit, relates to emotions.

  3. Neshamah       - Inner soul, relates to mind and intelligence, God breathed.

  4. Chayah            - Experiencing awareness of God, ongoing.

  5. Yechidah         - Relates to unity with God, total devotion and readiness.

Soul/ Nefesh:    Every living thing in the world has a Nefesh/Nephesh from plants to animals.  Plants are living, connected to the earth. One might say the earth has a soul (Power of God) that lives through the plants.  Known as an anchor for the four remaining, higher levels of the soul.

  • Can be seen as something that moves. Plants can move, not really on their own.

  • A lower state of creation, does not always have breath of God in it, a vessel though.

  •  Lowest level in humans that struggles with challenges, temptations and physical instincts. (the skin)

  • Notice in the verse below "the earth produces living creatures.”

Genesis 1:24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so."

§  We see a different means of creation here.  The EARTH produces the animal.

  • The animals have one Nefesh, they are connected somehow to the earth.  We have all heard of the circle of life, but its true.

  • There is a cooperation between the plants and the animals. The animals eat the plants, and the plants use the waste and bodies of the animals for food. The animals also carry the seeds of the plants to other locations for growth.

  •  When I see an animal eat another animal, the lessor serves the greater but they are both served and end up in the Adamah/ground.

  • Fish and birds are different: God blessed the fish and birds to fill the waters and the earth.  They were commanded, they have a job, they have a purpose.  Notice they are blessed, wonder why.

Ruach/Wind/Spirit - Every animate thing has a Ruach/Spirit as well, the life-giving force that animates the living thing. The Nefesh would then be the shell and the Spirit is the purpose of that shell.  As I understand it would be like the battery, power for the shell to move with purpose.

  • As I understand it Animals would need this to power up.

  • Animal soul/spirit is driven by quest for self-preservation and self-enhancement.

  • This is said to be the level of the soul where we instinctively know the difference between good and evil.

  • This level or character is said to be able to be developed or grown also.

  •  Like a child that does not know God learning how to behave for society’s sake.

  •  Proverbs 1:2 “To know wisdom and instruction/Mussar to discern the words of understanding/comprehension.:

  • This is the place of thought and mind, emotions and breath.

Neshamah - The ‘spark’ of God that makes us different from the non-sentient and allows us to take on the responsibilities that God gives us.

Gensis 2:7 “And יהוה  Elohim formed the man out of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils breath/Neshamah of lives. And the man became a living being/Nephesh.”

(Breath of lives: It can be a masculine plural)

  •  Neshamah:  Breath of God:  God breathed our soul into us. Our breath is the life of us. Our words speak the essence of our soul as our breath comes out.

  • We speak on exhalation from our lungs and being.

  • This is start of wisdom of intellect.  Where one really feels Gods breath.  This brings the: Fruit of this Ruach: Love, Joy, Peace, ….  Galatians 5:22.

  • This needs to be awakened in us.  We see it dormant in people that don’t seek, love or want the Creator in their life.  They don’t understand their life purpose.

  • This seems to be able to be grown.  The seed is given to us and there is a lot of potential for growth.

·

  • "Nesh'mat Chayim" is a Hebrew plural term that translates to "the breath of life." In Jewish tradition, it refers to the concept of the divine essence that animates living beings. This idea originates, where God breathes the breath of life into Adam giving him life. The Adam in the Garden, placed in Eden.

  • The phrase "Nesh'mat Chayim" reflects the belief that life is more than just physical existence; it encompasses a spiritual dimension as well. It signifies the vital force or soul within each living being that connects them to the divine. This concept is central to Jewish theology and is the relationship between the material and spiritual realms.

  • In Jewish thought, the idea of "Nesh'mat Chayim" underscores the sanctity and value of life, emphasizing the inherent dignity and worth of every individual. It also serves as a reminder of the responsibility to cherish and preserve life, as it is considered a sacred gift from the Divine.

CHANGE THIS: Known as the 4th level of the Soul.  (To me it seems as if some of the levels merge together)

  • Animals seem to have an amount of wisdom in them.

  •  Seat of will, desire, commitment and faith.  (According to Jewish thought)

  •  Emotions.  They don’t dictate who we are but what is going on inside of us.

  •  IF we experience joy, deep satisfaction in our spiritual experience then this is said to be our Chayah.

  •  Is our Chayah blind and deaf because we have a hard “Heart.”   So is our Chayah the seat of our heart?

  •  Heart/Lebab which is the inner man, Soul.  In Hebrew it is made up of two letters, Lev, the Sheperd staff, and Bet, the Tent.  Representing authority inside.

Yechidah: This is known as the essence of the soul.   A part of God above - the divine in us.

  •  Gods desire for your soul to become.

Melech, King in Hebrew is to be Mind Heart and liver.     Moach(mind) , Lev(heart) and Kaved(liver).

  • We are all to rule, to be king over our lower self, to rule and live in righteousness.

Kalem: Spell the word backwards:  Which is Kalem:  Kaved, Lev, Moach and you end up with embarrasement, shame and death.

  •  A life that is rule by the lust and animal self ends up in shame.

Isaiah 43:7-10

Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”  Bring out the people who are blind, yet have eyes, who are deaf, yet have ears! All the nations gather together, and the peoples assemble. Who among them can declare this, and show us the former things? Let them bring their witnesses to prove them right, and let them hear and say, It is true.

“You are my witnesses,” declares Yahweh, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.

NOTES:

  • Romans 8:5-7 “For they that are after the flesh do mind/Think/feel the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded/thoughtful is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”

  • Romans 8:14-17 “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons/descendants, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children(genuine descendants) of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

  • Are we lead with His Spirit or our thoughts and thinking.

  • Romans 19 "For the creation eagerly waits with anticipation for God’s sons to be revealed."

  • We are in the womb of creation.

Inner Being of ourselves:

Heart/Lebab H3824 which is the inner man, Soul

  • In Hebrew: It is the Sheperd staff, and Tent.  Representing authority inside.

  •  Psalm 73:21 "For my heart was in a ferment/sour/sick, And I was pierced in my kidneys.

  • (Kidney is known as the seat of emotion) So the heart can be like a rope around your being.

  • Ecclesiaties 2:23 "For all his days are sufferings, and his work grievous; even in the night his heart takes no rest. That too is futile."

  • The "heart" controls your sleep. Want to sleep? "Observe the sparrow." It has no concerns for anything or who it is, what it is or where its next meal is coming from.

  • This was part of the curse: Who is going to feed us? Remember Marah in the bible, they worried about water!

  • “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” Deuteronomy 6:4

  • The word is Meod H3966 which is:  Much, Smoke, Mist, Heap.  My thoughts is the smoke fills the room which is all but in a spiritual way,

  • not in a muscle way.    I have always thought about the Spirit to be like a blanket. It settles over you when you are in a state of something.

Spirit, kind of like a veil, light blanket or heavy:

  • If the Spirit of peace comes over you, then you have great peace. If depression comes over you then you have a heavy blanket of depression on you. What is the Spirit that seems to settle on you?

Chayim and Chayah:

  1. Chayim (חַיִּים):

    1. "Chayim" is the plural form of "chai," meaning "life" or "lives."

    2. It is commonly used to refer to life in a general sense, the state of being alive, or the lifespan of an individual or a group.

    3. For example, "L'chayim" (לְחַיִּים) is a Hebrew toast that literally means "to life."

  2. Chayah (חַיָּה):

    1. "Chayah" is a verb that means "to live" or "to be alive."

    2. It is often used in the context of living beings, such as animals or humans, and can convey the idea of vitality or thriving life.

    3. "Chayah" can also be used in the sense of "to revive" or "to be restored to life."

    4. In some contexts, "chayah" can be translated as "to live" or "to have life."

While both words are related to the concept of life, "Chayim" is a noun that generally refers to life itself or lives, while "Chayah" is a verb that refers to the action or state of living or being alive.
